Our Petition
To the Town of Brookline Select Board and Parks Department:
We, the undersigned residents and community members, respectfully petition the Town of Brookline to prioritize keeping Griggs Park accessible during its upcoming renovation.
Background
Griggs Park is a vital green space that serves dozens of families, children, dog owners, and community members every day. The planned renovation, while welcome, threatens to close the entire park for an extended period — potentially a year or longer.
Our Request
We ask that the Town of Brookline:
- Select a contractor committed to phased construction — renovating one section of the park at a time while keeping the remaining areas open and accessible to the public.
- Prioritize community access in the contractor selection criteria, weighing the importance of maintaining access to the park heavily while planning and negotating.
- Communicate transparently with residents about the renovation schedule and which areas will be accessible at any given time.
- Keep Griggs park dog-friendly and continue the green dog program at our park.
Why This Matters
Complete closure of Griggs Park would significantly impact our community:
- Families with young children rely on the playground and open spaces for daily outdoor activity
- Dog owners depend on the park for their pets' exercise and socialization
- Elderly residents use the park for walks and community connection
- The park serves as a gathering place that strengthens neighborhood bonds
While we understand that renovations require some disruption, a phased approach can achieve the Town's improvement goals while respecting the community's need for continuous access to this essential public space.
